If you think about it, the internet can be a huge and rather scary place. Why? Because you are putting yourself out there, as well as your personal information and sometimes even your personal feelings. Server security is an important issue because of this; everything from web logs (blogs) to personal financial information, names, addresses, personal histories, are stored in servers somewhere way out there in computer land. Server security is the process of guarding this information from intrusion by hackers or other potentially harmful means of extracting information.
Identity theft is a huge issue in the news today; just Google the term and you will be amazed at the results you receive, getting higher and higher with each passing day that goes by. Web server security projects are constantly being worked on to help improve the security of people’s personal information. Consider a world without server security; businesses that have internet interfaces for their businesses and sell things over the web are taking in personal information for their clientele, like names, addresses, birth dates, and even driver’s license numbers and credit card numbers. Wouldn’t you prefer that your personal information was guarded safely rather than not? Many web pages boast that their pages are ‘hacker safe’ and that they are taking time out to ‘create a secure connection.’ all this means is that extra precautions have been taken to ensure that your personal information is not stolen or ‘phished’ from the site and used for unauthorized purposes. Sites must store your information in order to process an order and gather all of the necessary information to do so, but whether or not other ‘unauthorized’ people are able to get into it is a whole other ordeal altogether. Windows has a site up that offers security updates and patches that are necessary to keep your computer as safe as possible, as well as information on server security in general and how to protect your personal information. Windows 2003 security updates and higher are available on the web on the official Windows website, as well as most of the tools a person could need to keep their own personal computers safe and intruder free. For larger servers there are companies that are completely in charge of client network server security; it is what keeps the companies who have such large servers with such a plethora of information stored in them as safe as humanly possible with proper attention to all potential leaks or weaknesses in the server security infrastructure.
